Displaying Trees in Arc Scene

$

I’m new to ArcScene. I’m using a historic map, in arcmap, to draw old roads, garden plots and tree locations. My trees are in a point shapefile in ArcMap, I brought them into ArcScene and I’m trying to figure out how I can display them in a way that is true to their height. Can you provide a step-by-step instructional guide on how to do this? I used the surface elevations of my DEM to assign ZM values (see Z column). I also assigned an arbitrary 20ft value to each tree (see Zoffset column).

Snapshot

I think I have all of the correct information in my ZM tree shapefile but I’m just not using the correct tools to display what I need to display. Can you help? I’ve searched for a couple of days online and can’t find anything. I noticed in your “How to correctly display trees in ArcScene” that your snapshot showed trees of different sizes. Hoping you can assist.

thanks!

PS do you know of any additional tutorials I could use for this project? Web forums, youtube videos, books, etc. I would like to use ArcScene for future projects, this is my first. All future projects of interest would be created in the same way- bringing in a map or aerial, adding buildings (currently from sketchup), adding landscape features like trees, water and roads.

Base height information is lost when I create a Scene Package

I am using ArcScene 10.2.2

When I create a scene package, and then unpack it, I lose any base height information I have given to layers in the package, which I have draped over TINs. I get the Error ‘Unable to find and set the base surface for [layer]. Go to Base Heights tab on the layer’s properties dialog and reset the surface to resolve the problem.’ Which of course I can do, and it resolves the problem, but I would like to send this package to someone else and have them be able to open it without having to go into the properties dialog.

Checking/unchecking the box ‘include enterprise geodatabase data instead of referencing the data’ does not seem to work, nor does storing relative pathnames in the scene documents properties.

Any suggestions?

Create shadow of building in ArcScene

I want to create shadow of a building at different time in ArcScene but I am a beginner of using ArcScene so I am not familiar with this. I am using ArcGIS 10.2.2 version.

I tried to use “sun shadow volume tool” in “visibility” in “3D analyst tool” but the shadow cannot present in different time and in animation.

After that, I found some reference on the internet, it is using “Skyline” and “Skyline barrier” tool to create shadow of the building.
However, I am not understand how to define the position of the Sun and also how to create an animation to present the shadow in different time. Or can I do this?

Exporting 3d shapes from CityEngine to ArcScene

I have a 3d city model in CityEngine and exported it to ArcScene (Multipatch Features). Then i would like to float the shapes on a DEM. The problem is, that i can not float it on that DEM in ArcScene…i can only put a constant value, which is not helping me.

How do i export it correctly from CityEngine that i can float in in ArcScene?

Integrate BIM (Revit) and GIS (ArcScene) (IFC to CityGML)

I am doing a project related to integrate BIM and GIS for visibility analysis. I exported the BIM (Revit project) to IFC format from Revit. But I cannot use the IFC for visibility analysis in ArcScene. Any suggestion for this?

So I converted the IFC model to CityGML via FME. I tried to import the CityGML (.gml file) in ArcScene for visibility analysis but there is “no geometry” and nothing imported. The ArcGIS I used is ArcGIS 10.2.2 (Advanced Single User- 60 days trial version).
Can this version read CityGML file?

I found some reference said that it needs professional licensing level to read and write CityGML. How to get the professional licensing?

Adjusting heights within a DEM raster for visualisation

Problem

I have a bathymetry DEM which I want to display in 3D (ArcScene or Fledermaus). The data set is one single raster but looks like it is a mosaic of several smaller datasets. The problem is the absolute height values between these sub-sets varies and is quite prominent: resulting in the cliff like features in the below picture.
3d image

Goal

I want to ‘correct’ each of the subsets to create a more smooth and realistic scene. I’m not bothered by the accuracy of the depths, this is just a relative correction for visualisation.

My Ideas

Originally I had hoped we had the individual sub-sets as separate raster and I was going to start from the largest sub-set raster, take an adjoining raster and add or takeaway the mean difference in the heights along their adjoining edge. Maybe looking a bit at the difference in error from one side of the edge to the other. For an indication the bin size is 100m and depths only change by 1-3m between cells within a sub-set. Between sub-sets the difference is 30-100m.

Keeping his idea in mind, I then tried to separate the sub-sets back out (‘un-mosaic’). Manually digitising will work but it’s a lot of manual labour – too much to justify doing. Picking out the edge has to be quite precise because if I am a cell out on either side the cliff edges will still be there.

I have been trying to find more automated ways of doing this and tried a lot of edge finding filters (3×3 and 5×5 using various values) and sharpening techniques although my experience of working with rasters in this way is quite limited. It sort of worked but wasn’t too great and the edge it would pick out was 2-3 pixels wide.

I then just tried all of the hydrology tools (ArcMap) and slope as I thought they might help pick out these sharp contacts. That worked like the above filtering but gave better results when I used the ‘Drop’ raster from the ‘Flow Direction’ tool. See below:
2D raster
2D edges

This isn’t perfect but I thought I could use this, convert to polylines, manually digitise the missed parts, convert to polygons and then clip each sub-set. I’m not even sure that this would work but converting to polylines gives me the below issue. Using the simplify lines check box just made the geoprocessing run for almost 24 hours before I cancelled it.

Any ideas where to go from here? Any other methodologies that would work better than this?

Arcscene elevation problem

I don’t know if anybody has met with the same problem, but it is quite frustrating. As you can see in the picture I have a shapefile with the specific territory and the settlements which have the same custom surface. However, the settlements are levitate randomly (at least for me). I didn’t set up any elevation offset or elevation value. Does anyone know a solution for this?

Unable to set raster surface resolution in ArcScene?

I have a 3-band subset of a Landsat image which I want to display in ArcScene (of ArcGIS version 10.2.1).

The image is 30 meter resolution and I am draping it on a 25m resolution Aster DEM. But have problems with the resolution.

Whether I set the cell size to 25m, 30m, 1m or 1000m, the result is always 6o meter pixels! Rendering the image in a high quality does not help.

Did anyone experience this and is able to help?

Multipatch footprint of Sun Shadow Volume in ArcScene (removal of below ground shadows)

$

I am new to using ArcScene and encountered a problem in my analysis. I want to calculate shadows in the city center of Utrecht on different times and days. Subsequently I want to transform these shades to polygons that represent the amount of shade on streetlevel. I am using the tools Sun Shadow Volume and Multipatch Footprint.

I extruded a layer with buildings (with heights in the attribute table) on a TIN with the baseheights of Utrecht, which is almost flat (image 1). Subsequently I ran the Sun Shadow Volume tool, which seems to work fine. However, the resulting shades cut through the baselayer (image 2). When I want to transform them to footprints, I get the footprints at the lowest point, instead of at baseheight level (image 3).

Does anybody know whether I can change the settings in Sun Shadow Volume tool somehow? Or in the Multipatch Footprint tool? Or did I already do something wrong with the extrusion?

No texture after Importing .dae COLLADA to ArcScene?

I’m attempting to export a .dae collada file from Photoscan to ArcScene 10.1. I’ve followed instructions from a couple of sources, created the file geodatabase, imported the file as a multipoint feature into the geodatabase, however, after import the mesh shows fine but without the texture detail: just a solid block of colour. I’ve checked and haven’t imported as a shapefile by mistake. I can’t work out why Arcscene isn’t ‘seeing’ .jpg texture file which is located alongside the .dae file. Works fine when i export from Photoscan to Meshlab.

I’ve checked online and people seem to have similar problems with .dae files in different pieces of software incl. Blender, as well as ArcGIS.

Is there any way to link the mesh to the .jpg in ArcScene?

I want to create a fly around of a mine dump in ArcScene. I know that I can add a viewer(s) and create different perspectives of the main scene. But is it possible to have for example an aerial photo/.ecw in the smaller viewer while I fly around the .dxf design in the main viewer?

Modelling open water flow in TIN-model using ArcGIS for Desktop?

I have a TIN-model created from 1800 xyz-coordinates (that I also have). There is an pipe leading all the water in and on for all the water out.
I would very much like to simulate movement of the water under different volumes of water flowing into the system.
Any bright ideas?

I already tried HEC-RAS / Hec-geoRAS but it doesn’t work with ARC 10.3 which is the only version i can get from my university.

Why is my DEM in ArcScene flat, not 3D?

$

I am working with Digital Elevation Models in format TIFF 2km * 2km. As far as I know DEMs should have a 3d function but in my case the DEMs are flat. They only look 3d because of the hill shading. But when I open the DEM in ArcScene it is flat.

How can I turn the DEM into a real 3d model? How can I see the z values?

Visualize PostGIS 3D line geometry [closed]

$

I have PostGIS table with 2 geometries ( “GEOMETRY(MULTILINESTRINGZ)” and “GEOMETRY(LINESTRINGZ)” ). There are lines made just from 2 points – XY are WGS and both of them have random elevation Z (I hope default units are meters).

Example from ST_AsTExt(geom):
1) LINESTRINGZ (2.17766 41.3885803 0,2.18333 41.3833 754)
2) MULTILINESTRING Z ((2.17766 41.3885803 0,2.18333 41.3833 754))

I tried to visualize them in ArcScene, ArcGlobe, qgis2three and I can’t see them as 3D nowhere. They act as 2D…

I also tried export to SHP with ogr:

ogr2ogr -f "ESRI Shapefile" "~/myshape" PG:"user={user} password={pass} dbname={dbname} host={host}" {table} -geomfield GeomColumn

… and checked with “ogrinfo file.SHP” which just says it’s Linestring for both files (nothing about multilinestringz and Z coordinate).

None of two SHP’s were displayed as 3D.

So, is there any error in my geometry types?

Should I specify CRS in data type?

Should I add Z coordinate CRS/unit somehow?

Are any other options required to set them as 3D in Arc* products?

Is there any other easy option to export and check 3D of at least few lines somehow (I am now going to explore possibilities of 3D in ST_AsGeoJson, later maybe Grass GIS)?

addLayer = arcpy.mapping.Layer(r"F:projectFinalGround floorsteps.lyr")
arcpy.mapping.AddLayer(df, addLayer, "BOTTOM")

this code is for adding a layer in arcmap. when i use the same code to add a 3D layer in arcscene i get the following error
